If your tarmac has cracked, your block paving has sunk or the gravel is more weed than stone, you have probably heard that resin can go straight on top. At Eco Resin Driveways, we tell you honestly whether Resin Overlays will work on your drive or whether the old base has to come out first. Call us on 01536 580137 and we will arrange a free site survey.

What it costs, with sources: Rutland Driveways (Resin driveways in Kettering, October 2026) puts a full resin bound drive in Kettering at £150–£220 per m², covering dig-out, base, edging, surface and clear-up. Laying resin over a sound existing base is far cheaper. BestBuilders (resin driveway cost guide, updated 22 August 2026) quotes £40–£55 per m² for that route. The gap between those figures is the base, which is what this page is about.

Why Tired Drives Are Worth Saving, and When They Are Not

Most people who contact us want the same thing: a front drive that looks smart from the road, with no weeds, no loose stones dragged into the hall and no cracks reappearing after a year. A resin surface gives you that finish, but only if what sits underneath is sound.

Resin is a thin, hard-wearing layer. It follows whatever is below it. Lay it over a sunken or crumbling base and the problems come through, usually within a couple of winters. Lay it over a firm, well-drained base and a properly installed drive lasts 15–25 years (BestBuilders, updated 22 August 2026).

Will My Old Drive Take a Resin Surface?

Sometimes. Tarmac or concrete that is solid, level and only cosmetically worn can often take a new surface directly. Drives with deep cracks, heaving, standing water or soft spots usually need the base replaced. We look at it in person and tell you which applies, because the answer decides the price.

Our page on resin over tarmac and concrete covers how we judge an existing surface and what repairs it needs first.

What Goes Under the Resin

This is where cheap quotes cut corners, so we explain it plainly.

  • Sound base, overlay possible: the existing surface is cleaned, repaired and levelled, then the resin is laid on top. The BestBuilders guide gives £40–£55 per m² for this.
  • New permeable sub-base: a fresh stone layer that lets water drain through. The same guide gives £60–£90 per m².
  • Failing base removed: where the old drive has to be dug out and replaced, BestBuilders says to add £50–£80 per m².

Ground matters too. Rutland Driveways (October 2026) notes that the ground around Kettering ranges from ironstone to clay, and that new-build plots are often compacted subsoil under thin topsoil. Clay holds water and moves, so drainage and sub-base depth need real thought. The same applies to the newer estates, including Hanwood Park, where the topsoil is thin and the ground below is often poorly drained.

Local Prices Compared Fairly

Prices for the same job vary a lot, and MyBuilder (resin driveway cost guide, 2026) reports that installers in one area can differ by 20–30%. That is why we publish the sources behind our figures rather than a vague “from” price.

Typical Kettering drive of 30–50 m²roughly £4,500–£11,000Rutland Driveways, October 2026

Block or steel edging£30–£60 per linear metreBestBuilders, updated 22 August 2026
UV-stable resin upgrade£5–£12 per m²BestBuilders, updated 22 August 2026

National guides run lower. MyJobQuote (updated 6 October 2026) gives £60–£95 per m² on average, and £3,500–£5,500 for a 60 m² drive taking 2–5 days. Treat those as a floor, not a Kettering quote. Your own figure depends on the base, the edging and the shape of the drive, and the survey is where we work it out.

The UV-stable upgrade is worth taking seriously. BestBuilders notes that UV-stable clear resin stops yellowing, which matters on a pale, south-facing drive.

Keeping the Build Permeable

Resin bound surfacing lets water pass through, and that has a practical benefit. The Planning Portal (Paving your front garden, 2026) says no planning permission is needed for a new or replacement driveway of any size that uses permeable surfacing, or that drains to a lawn or border. It also says permission is needed to lay more than 5 m² of impermeable surface in a front garden that drains to the road.

So a permeable build keeps most front drives within permitted development. If your drive slopes toward the road or has unusual drainage, we talk it through at the survey before any work is priced.

Dropped Kerbs and North Northamptonshire Council

If the pavement in front of your house has no lowered kerb, you will need a dropped kerb from North Northamptonshire Council before you can legally drive across it. This catches out many homeowners who have already spent money on the surface. Apply first, check the council’s current fee and conditions on its website, and do not book the surface until you have the go-ahead. We can point you to the right process during the survey.

Kettering Frontages and Choosing a Colour

A lot of Kettering’s older streets are red brick, and some have ironstone walls or detailing. Warm, earthy resin mixes tend to sit well against that, while very bright or cold tones can look out of place. New-build estates are different again, with pale brick and concrete tile roofs that suit greys and lighter stone shades.

We don’t ask you to choose from a leaflet. At the free survey we lay colour samples against your own frontage, so you see them next to your brickwork, your front door and your neighbours’ drives in real daylight.

Kettering also has 26 conservation areas, including the town centre, Barton Seagrave, Burton Latimer, Geddington and Rothwell (Rutland Driveways, October 2026). If your home is in one, check with the council about any extra rules before you settle on a surface and colour.

How We Work, From Survey to Handover

  1. Free survey. We measure up, inspect the existing surface, check levels and drainage and lay samples against your house.
  2. A written price. You get a figure that separates the surface, the base work and the edging, so you can see where the money goes.
  3. Preparation. The old drive is repaired or removed, the edging is set and the base is finished properly.
  4. Laying. Resin and stone are mixed and trowelled to a smooth, even finish. MyJobQuote (updated 6 October 2026) says late spring or early autumn is usually the best time, because winter cold and rain can spoil the cure.
  5. Back in use. BestBuilders (updated 22 August 2026) says resin bound is safe to walk on in 4–6 hours and ready for vehicles in 24–48 hours, depending on temperature.

Labour on installer teams typically runs at £300–£500 per day (MyJobQuote, updated 6 October 2026), so a quote that looks far too cheap for the area usually means short days or a skipped base.

Where We Work

We are based in Kettering and cover the surrounding towns and villages, including Corby, Wellingborough, Rothwell, Desborough and Burton Latimer. The ground and housing stock change from one to the next, from ironstone and old brick to modern estates on compacted fill, and we adjust the preparation to suit.

Next Step

Whether your drive just needs a fresh surface or the whole base has to go, the first step is the same: someone looking at it properly. We will tell you straight what will work, what it should cost and what to ask any other installer.
